Dr Jernej Drofelnik

I have graduated in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maribor (Slovenia) in 2012. Later that year, I have joined Dr Campobasso’s Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) research group at University of Glasgow (currently working at Lancaster University). There I worked on numerous research projects focusing on the development and application of three-dimensional (3D) Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) CFD system COSA for general fluid-based renewable energy applications. This work included the development of crucial parts of the frequency-domain harmonic balance (HB) RANS solver, coupled to the shear stress transport turbulence model, for complex 3D aerodynamic analyses of horizontal-axis wind turbines. HB is a nonlinear frequency-domain perturbation method for calculating periodic solutions of systems of ordinary differential equations. Its use in RANS CFD enables a substantially faster calculation of periodic flow fields with respect to time-domain integration, yielding negligible accuracy penalties. In December 2016 I gained my PhD in Aerospace Engineering from University of Glasgow.

In February 2017, I have joined Dr Andrea Da Ronch’s research group at the University of Southampton. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to carry on my research work on several interesting national and international research projects, and to help students develop their research skills and ambitions in engineering. During my short research career, I have developed an outstanding research profile and gained numerous unique multi-cultural experiences (Undergraduate degree in Slovenia, Erasmus exchange and internship in the UK, PhD degree in the UK).

Research interests. My research interests include the development of rapid CFD methods for aeroelasticity, aircraft design, and renewable energy devices. Moreover, I share passion for hybrid shared- and distributed-memory parallelization of HB RANS solvers. The impact of my research activities in the development of software tool COSA has gained significant visibility within the scientific community.
